Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, a galvanized round duct running below the ceiling, wood-framed concrete walls, and a long stack of split firewood on a concrete floor scattered with sawdust.

Ductwork laid out for one kind of heating system does not automatically suit another, and in Washington County that gap between what a house was built with and what runs in it now shapes every installation quote. Half the homes in Washington County, Colorado were built in 1958 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a water heater job here measures the existing runs, checks clearances, and decides what stays and what has to change before the equipment price means much. The electrical service gets the same look: panels in older stock were sized for loads that predate what a modern unit draws.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled gable roof, showing interior rooms with furniture, piping, a tall vent stack, and a cylindrical water heater tank.

The tank or tankless unit is the core of the system. A storage tank sits in a utility closet, basement, or garage and holds a ready supply of heated water. A tankless unit mounts on a wall and heats water as it moves through, taking up far less floor space.

A pressure relief valve attaches directly to the tank and releases pressure if it climbs beyond a safe point. Cold water supply lines feed into the unit, and hot water lines carry the output to every fixture in the house. A drain line runs from the relief valve to a nearby floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what the installation requires for your specific home.
